Botox Q & A

New England Dry Eye & Aesthetics

What is Botox?

Neuromodulators are wrinkle-relaxing injections used to treat wrinkles and fine lines on your face. Common neuromodulators are well-known to the world as Botox, Dysport®, and Xeomin®.

Botox and similar neuromodulators are injectable drug treatments that Dr. Jaccoma, Shanda Curtin, RN and the Aesthetic staff use to improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines and wrinkles. Made of purified proteins, Botox works by reducing activity in the muscles responsible for causing:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Wrinkles
  • Brow lines
  • Some “smoker’s lines” around the mouth area.

Botox weakens the muscles causing the wrinkles, and the results can last for several months, providing you with smoother-looking skin.

If you suffer from excessive sweating under your arms and on your hands and feet or experience chronic migraine headaches, Botox may also be effective in treating these conditions.

How do Botox injections work?

Dr. Jaccoma or Shanda Curtin, RN insert Botox injections in the treatment area, targeting the underlying muscles that are responsible for wrinkles and frown lines. Botox relaxes the muscles to reduce the appearance of the fine lines.

To determine if Botox is right for you, Dr. Jaccoma or Shanda Curtin, RN reviews your medical history and current medications. The Aesthetic staff may recommend that you stop taking certain medications before the procedure, including allergy and sleep medications, and blood thinner drugs.

The Aesthetic staff also discusses your desired results and expectations for treatment.

What can I expect after Botox treatments?

Following your Botox injection, the treatment area may have swelling or slight bruising. You can return to your normal activities right after the treatment.

While rare, side effects of using Botox include:

  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Facial asymmetry
  • If injected around the mouth area for smoker’s lines, it is possible to soften certain sounds like the letter “P” or reduce the puckering in a kiss or whistle.

Temporary eyelid drooping is also possible and should resolve on its own in a few days. (Medication is available to assist if this occurs or lasts for a few days).

Once swelling resolves, you notice younger-looking, smoother skin in and around the treatment area. Results are most noticeable about four weeks after your initial treatment and should last for 3-6 months depending on the treatment area.

What are the benefits of Botox?

Botox eliminates wrinkles and frown lines and gives you a more youthful appearance without surgery.

Other benefits include:

  • Noninvasive treatment
  • Comfortable in-office procedure
