Dermal Fillers Q & A

New England Dry Eye & Aesthetics

What are dermal fillers?

As you age, your skin naturally loses volume and elasticity as your body decreases its production of collagen and elastin. As a result, your skin becomes wrinkled and saggy.

Dermal fillers are FDA-approved materials that the Aesthetic staff uses to restore volume in your face, reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles without surgery. They inject the fillers into areas of your body where you want to increase fullness.

Dermal fillers can:

  • Increase fullness of lips
  • Improve facial contours
  • Reduce crow’s feet and lines
  • Soften skin creases and wrinkles
  • Improve appearance of scars

What types of dermal fillers are available?

The Aesthetic staff offers a variety of dermal fillers and aesthetic products from the Allergan, Galderma and Merz Aesthetics line of products to reduce sagging skin or plump lips and improve the appearance of the eyelids without makeup, including:

  • Radiesse®
  • Belotero®
  • Juvẻderm®
  • Voluma®
  • Sculptra®
  • Restylane®
  • Botox® (a medication injected to reduce wrinkles by relaxing muscles - not a filler)
  • Xeomin®( a medication injected to reduce wrinkles by relaxing muscles - not a filler)
  • Dysport® (a medication injected to reduce wrinkles by relaxing muscles - not a filler)
  • Latisse® (a topical prescription product to extend and volumize eyelashes - not a filler)

Dr. Jaccoma and Shanda Curtin, RN can evaluate the condition of your skin to determine which dermal filler treatment is right for you. Combinations of muscle relaxants that reduce the wrinkles caused by over-animation (like frowning) together with fillers that add volume can often offer optimal rejuvenation - sometimes augmented with IPL or radio wave treatments to stimulate natural rejuvenating processes. They also discuss your goals and expectations to ensure you’re a good candidate for dermal filler treatments.

What are the risks of dermal fillers?

Before your procedure, Dr. Jaccoma reviews possible risks of using dermal fillers. These risks include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Lumps
  • Ulcers
  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Skin rash

While dermal filler injections offer lasting results after the first treatment, it may be necessary to repeat the procedure over time as fillers dissipate. Avoiding blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen - or stronger products like warfarin if OK’d by your doctor, may help limit the risk of bruising. Please tell us if you are on blood thinners or supplements that might complicate your treatments.

What can I expect during a dermal filler treatment?

Before the filler treatment, the Aesthetic staff cleans the injection site thoroughly and applies a numbing anesthetic medication to ensure your comfort during the procedure. The Aesthetic staff injects the fillers into the target areas.

Following your treatment, you may experience swelling and some discomfort. The Aesthetic staff may provide you with an ice pack to reduce swelling before allowing you to go home.

The injection site may feel uncomfortable for a day or two after treatment. Swelling should resolve within a few days.

You can return to your normal activities after treatment, although the Aesthetic staff may recommend avoiding strenuous activity for several days to minimize your risk of bruising and swelling.

Initially, the treatment area may appear overfilled until the fillers settle into place. If approved by the Aesthetic staff, you can massage the area several times a day to aid in your recovery (please do not massage unless instructed to do so). Your results should be visible within a few days after the swelling goes down and any bruising fades.
